It is the act of creation that is important, less so the result. It is the act of moving your brain and body to achieve something beyond earning money or survival, (not to say that creating something can’t earn you money nor enable/ensure your survival). It is an addiction, a disease and a pleasant long weekend. Seaton Kay-Smith is a writer, actor and producer, who, in July 2022, hungry for new ways to involve himself in the creative process and collaborate with likeminded individuals, began art modelling. Some things he makes turn out better than anticipated, others don’t. To have made them at all, however, is more than worth the effort to do so. Aside from writing, acting and modelling, Seaton draws, animates and writes songs. Everything you create is a story, with a plot or an emotion or a point. He is currently learning how to code video games.
Perhaps it is an illness, this obsession with creating things, a hunger that gets worse and deeper the more it is fed. But, which, left to starve, turns sour and dark and eats its owner. Creation is a paradox. When you feed it, it both grows more ravenous and experiences satiation. It is Ouroboros, eating its own tail, growing fat on itself, failing and learning and living and creating. Sometimes it chokes on its own tail, but it never develops a fear of its food source for it finds in the sweet nourishment of art, a fulfillment and happiness, without which it might die. Also, it’s heaps of fun.
